Alan Uke on Dec. 1 announced his candidacy for the 50th congressional district seat vacated by Randy "Duke" Cunningham, who pleaded guilty Nov. 28 to tax evasion and conspiracy.

Founder and past president of the Midway Aircraft Carrier Museum, Uke, 53, also started the Poway-based Underwater Kinetics, a designer and manufacturer of scuba diving equipment, 34 years ago. The company, which employs more than 100 workers, exports products to more than 60 countries.

"I'll oppose efforts to raise taxes, use my business skills to cut government waste, fight to expand the wall along the border, and man it with sufficient personnel to stop illegal immigration," said the Del Mar Republican, "and I'll ensure that our troops have the support and equipment they need to win the war on terror."

Uke also pledged to reduce reliance on foreign oil by working to develop alternative sources of energy, and reduce the price of gasoline by removing barriers to building more refineries in California.

Among his honors, he was named Entrepreneur of the Year by both the Entrepreneur Institute and the county Board of Supervisors for his achievements with UK.

Uke and his wife, Diane, have four children.

Also on Dec. 1, Brian Bilbray, who represented the 49th congressional district in San Diego's South Bay from 1995 to 2001, announced his candidacy for the 50th District seat.

"I decided to run for Congress because there are some real changes that need to be made in Washington and right here in San Diego," said Bilbray, 54, at a news conference in Solana Beach.

His platform includes securing the border, getting the federal budget under control, and obtaining California's "fair share" of federal dollars to reduce traffic congestion and protect natural resources.

Among his accomplishments, Bilbray cited the legislation he wrote to stop polluting cars from crossing the border; and his vote to beef up the Border Patrol.

Bilbray, who had represented the 49th congressional district in the South Bay, lost re-election in 2000 to Susan Davis, D-San Diego.

Since he left Congress, Bilbray has been running his own public affairs businesses, and is co-chairman of the National Board of Advisors for the Federation for American Immigration Reform.

He and his wife, Karen, have five children and one grandchild
