Donald E. Felsinger will serve as Sempra Energy's new chairman and CEO, the company announced Dec. 7.

Felsinger, 58, has served as Sempra's chief operating officer since June 2004 and takes over early next year for Chief Executive Officer Stephen L. Baum, who is retiring.

Felsinger's promotion brings other changes in the company, the region's largest energy supplier and an employer of 13,000 people worldwide.

Neal E. Schmale, 59, replaces Felsinger as chief operating officer and president, while Mark A. Snell, 49, will be promoted to executive vice president and chief financial officer.

Felsinger is a former president and chief operating officer of Enova Corp., which was the parent company of San Diego Gas & Electric Co. before the 1998 merger that created Sempra. Felsinger was president and CEO of SDG & E; from 1996 to 1998.

Schmale has served as Sempra's executive vice president and CFO since the company's founding. Snell has been group president of Sempra Global since August 2004.
