Ground has been broken this week on a new retail center that developers hope will serve the more than 11 million people who cross the Otay Mesa border with Mexico each year.

Los Angeles-based CB Richard Ellis made the announcement on Dec. 21 on behalf of Timberline Ocean View, LLC, which is building the Ocean View Hills Retail Center on the corner of Otay Mesa Road and Corporate Center Drive.

The center will be the first large retail project in the area, where an 87-acre business park and a large Department of Motor Vehicles office are also currently under development.

Once complete, the center will include more than 16,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space. Tenants will include Cali Mart, Subway and Fred Loya Insurance.

An expected completion date for the center project was not available.
